Hep Returns

Posted by Abe on Monday, July 26, 2004 @ 9:58 pm

Just when you thought the project was dead:

Hep 0.5

Although I haven’t been writing about it, I’ve been putting a lot of work into this release. It’s been about six months in the making, and represents a complete rewrite since the last version. It’s not much to look at yet, but the architecture is vastly improved, and I think the project is in a position where I’ll be able to make rapid progress going forward.

I’m too tired to get into the details now, but brave souls may feel free to download the packages and give it a whirl.

  3. Abe, This is really cool. Glad to see the return of Hep. I am wondering why the sudden motivation to step on the Hep accelerator?

  4. When trying to use Hep with KMail it goes into an endless loop trying to list the folders on the hep imap server.
    I also had to change a few lines in http.py to get it to start:
    def getFactory(app):
    svc = app.getServiceNamed(’Authenticator’)
    svc.startService()
    portal = svc.portal

  5. Eddie – I never lost interest in Hep, but weaknesses in the old architecture, along with my busy schedule, kept me from making progress. Now that the architectural issues have been taken care of, it’s full speed ahead!

    Tor – Thanks for the bug report, I’ll test Hep with KMail for the next release, and look into that http server problem.

  6. Abe, great to hear that its full steam ahead. Out of curiosity, what was the “old” architecture that had its weaknesses, and what is the “new” architecture (I.e., what was it that changed?). Was it external architecture that changed and improved, or internal architecture which you had more time to spend on recently? Or both?
